This is a "thought short", a random/semi-random thought that I came up with... so don't pick holes in my analogies please. :)
Would you rather be a cog in a machine or a piano key under the direction of a pianist? Neither has free will, each is simply a piece of something else, without real choice. The cog in a machine is without freedom, it simply does what it must without any decision making. The key's function can change, so thus choice might appear to exist, but does that choice really exist?

well, neither has any sort of sentience... But if they did. The key is much more likely to be used "wrong" or unmusically... the appearance of choice comes with the appearance of failure too...
